I recently got hooked downloading music through Limewire. It’s fun! And I never realized how much I missed listening to music. Music has been in the background much of the time for the past years that I have forgotten how enjoyable and fascinating it is when its the focus. It brings out moods of hopefulness, sadness, happiness, nostalgia, whatever…
31 Songs is Nick Hornby’s book of his memorable songs. Most of it are not popular - as pop music goes - at all that I have a hard time searching for it in Limewire. These songs though has become a part of his life.
So I’m doing the same here of my ten most memorable (I’ll do 30 when I get older):
1. Always Something There to Remind Me (Naked Eyes) - reminds me of high school - one of the happiest times of my life.
2. Bette Davis Eyes (Kim Carnes) - used as background music for a 7-Up commercial in the early 80s. That summer when I was so excited because I’m going to be in high school.
3. Imagine (John Lennon) - for a very hopeful reason.
4. When I See You Smile (Bad English) - the melody makes me feel good for some unexplainable reason.
5. Lemon Tree (Fool’s Garden) - a song that came out during ‘turbulent, but fun, youth’ when I moved to Manila about the same time No Doubt’s Don’t Speak came out.
6. IIsa (Gary Granada) - because he sang it at my wedding. Asawa ko and Gary have known each other for quite a time so he requested him to sing at our wedding.
7. Don’t Dream It’s Over (Crowded House) - starting college at Silliman U was not easy for me. It was my first time to be far from home and I wasn’t sure I’d make it ( I had so fun eventually that I got deported back to CDO).
8. Borderline (Madonna) - this song makes me really happy, nostalgic, whatever…
9. You Are So Beautiful (Joe Cocker) - not that it makes me beautiful when I listen to this song but Joe Cocker’s voice is so achingly hopeful and with that voice that’s saying ‘I can’t believe you’re in my life’ that makes it so touching.
10. I Need to Wake Up (Melissa Etheridge) - Go watch ‘An Inconvenient Truth’, it’s the most powerful powerpoint presentation you’ll ever see. The movie’s about climate change but there are a lot of other important things we should feel passionate about in fighting poverty and justice. Check out Bono’s campaign, ‘One’ or ‘Make Poverty History’ or Oxfam’s ‘Make Trade Fair’ (Oxfam’s currently campaigning on cheaper medicines in the Philippines. It’s a struggle on IP issues which TM students might find interesting). There are also several campaigns that Greenpeace does for the environment.
